നരകത്തില്‍ കിടക്കുന്ന ജീവന്‍ പോയ്
ദുരിതങ്ങളൊടുങ്ങി മനസ്സിന്റെ
പരിപാകവും വന്നു ക്രമത്താലേ
നരജാതിയില്‍ വന്നുപിറന്നിട്ടു
സുകൃതം ചെയ്തു മേല്‍പ്പോട്ടു പോയവര്‍
സ്വര്‍ഗ്ഗത്തിങ്കലിരുന്നു സുഖിക്കുന്നു
സുകൃതങ്ങളുമൊക്കെയൊടുങ്ങുമ്പോള്‍
പരിപാകവുമെള്ളോളമില്ലവര്‍
പരിചോടങ്ങിരുന്നിട്ടു ഭൂമിയില്‍
ജാതരായ് ദുരിതം ചെയ്തു ചത്തവര്‍.
വന്നൊരദ്ദുരിതത്തിന്‍ ഫലമായി
പിന്നെപ്പോയ് നരകങ്ങളില്‍ വീഴുന്നു
സുരലോകത്തില്‍ നിന്നൊരു ജീവന്‍ പോയ്
നരലോകേ മഹീസുരനാകുന്നു
ചണ്ഡകര്‍മ്മങ്ങള്‍ ചെയ്തവന്‍ ചാകുമ്പോള്‍
ചണ്ഡാലകുലത്തിങ്കല്‍പ്പിറക്കുന്നു
അസുരന്മാര്‍ സുരന്മാരായീടുന്നു
അമരങ്ങള്‍ മരങ്ങളായീടുന്നു
അജം ചത്തു ഗജമായ് പിറക്കുന്നു
ഗജം ചത്തങ്ങജവുമായീടുന്നു
നരി ചത്തു നരനായ് പിറക്കുന്നു
നാരി ചത്തുടന്‍ ഓരിയായ്‌പോകുന്നു.
കൃപ കൂടാതെ പീഡിപ്പിച്ചീടുന്ന
നൃപന്‍ ചത്തു കൃമിയായ് പിറക്കുന്നു.
ഈച്ച ചത്തൊരു പൂച്ചയായീടുന്നു.
ഈശ്വരന്റെ വിലാസങ്ങളിങ്ങനെ
കീഴ്‌മേലിങ്ങനെ മണ്ടുന്ന ജീവന്മാര്‍
ഭൂമിയീന്നത്രേ നേടുന്നു കര്‍മ്മങ്ങള്‍
സീമയില്ലാതോളം പല കര്‍മ്മങ്ങള്‍
ഭൂമിയീന്നത്രേ നേടുന്നു ജീവന്മാര്‍.
അങ്ങനെ ചെയ്തു നേടി മരിച്ചുടന്‍
അന്യലോകങ്ങളോരോന്നിലോരോന്നില്‍
ചെന്നിരുന്നു ഭുജിക്കുന്നു ജീവന്മാര്‍
തങ്ങള്‍ ചെയ്‌തോരു കര്‍മ്മങ്ങള്‍ തന്‍ഫലം.
ഒടുങ്ങീടുമതൊട്ടുനാള്‍ ചെല്ലുമ്പോള്‍;
ഉടനെ വന്നു നേടുന്നു പിന്നെയും;
തന്റെ തന്റെ ഗൃഹത്തിങ്കല്‍ നിന്നുടന്‍
കൊണ്ടുപോന്ന ധനംകൊണ്ടു നാമെല്ലാം
മറ്റെങ്ങാനുമൊരേടത്തിരുന്നിട്ടു
വിറ്റൂന്നെന്നുപറയും കണക്കിനേ.

Narakatthil kidakkunna jeevan poyi
Durithangal odungi manassinde
Paripakavum vannu kramathale
Nara jaathiyil vannu pirannittu
Sukrutham cheythu mel pottu poyavar
Swargathil irunnu sukhikkunnu
Sukrithangal okke yodungumbol
Paripakavam ellola millavar
Parichodangirunnittu bhoomiyil
Jatharayi duritham cheythu chatthavar
Vannora durithathin phalamayi
Pinne poyi narakathil veezhunnu…
Sura lokathil ninnoru jeevan poyi

Njanappana – Meaning in English
The souls that lie in the hell,
After suffering all the punishments,
And after having a reformed mind over time (after going through many cycle of birth and death)
Are born as Human beings
Those who did good deeds, would go above,
And enjoy their life in the heaven.
When all those joy and rewards for good deeds end,
Those who has no iota of a reformed mind,
Are born again on the earth,
And those who die after doing bad deeds,
Due to the results of their bad deeds,
Do end up in the hell.
A soul from the heaven,
Is born as a human on earth,
Those who were cruel in this birth,
Are born as an outcast on this earth,
Anti-gods / demons (asura) are reborn as demigods,
The immortal ones are born as trees,
A goat dies and reborn as an elephant,
And an elephant dies and born as a goat,
A tiger dies and then born as a human,
The lady dies and reborn as a fox,
The King who is merciless and cruel,
After death is born as a worm,
The fly dies and be born as a cat,
And all these are but the god’s leela (play).
Our souls run from the top to bottom (and vice versa)
Gathers all the Karmas in their life on the earth
Limitless are these different karmas
Are done by our soul on this earth
Those who die after gaining all that (karma),
Go to various worlds – from heaven to hell and vice versa
And enjoy the rewards of their karmas
And these rewards end before not too long
Then they are born again and start accumulating new karmas
Like taking our money from our own house
Instead of using it for good cause (in own house)
Waste all of that money elsewhere
Until everything is lost.

Comments
In these verses from Njanappana / Jnanappana, the poet Poonthanam Namboodiri talks about various stages in this cycle of birth and death – samsara / samsāra. He says that, our soul goes through many stages in life, washing away multitudes of sins, thus attaining maturity of mind, before being born as human beings. It is considered that, soul is born as a human after many, many births and deaths as various other species. Being born as human is indeed one of the rarest opportunities for the soul to attain salvation or moksha.
